10. Donald Trump
There’s usually a cult of die-hard followers that dress up as The Donald every year anyway, but what with the particularly large waves he’s been making these past few months it could possibly turn into a legion. His hilariously short-lived bid for a presidential nomination, and his rather brazen criticisms of the other candidates, made the “Apprentice” boss a focal point among pundits and anyone paying the least bit of attention to the race. Expect to hear “You’re fired!” a lot. A whole lot.

9. Vampires

Since about, say, 2008, vampires have rebounded as one of society’s favorite monsters. A slew of movies, books, and TV shows about them that have come out recently, including Nikita, The Vampire Diaries, and, the mother of them all, Twilight, which coincidently begins its conclusion with Part 1 of its final movie coming out in November. If you’re a tween or a middle-aged mother who wishes she was a tween, then we have the costume for you.

8. The Smurfs

Back in the 80’s, the Smurfs were where it was at. The little blue guys have always been beloved by their fan base, and their latest movie with Neil Patrick Harris introduced a whole new generation to their magic. Not to mention that there are over thirty individual ones to choose from, making this a great idea for a group effort. For kids or even adults who still hold a special place in their hearts for Papa Smurf, dressing up as these guys is sure to win some “aws” and even a few nostalgia points.

7. Morphsuits

Morphsuits have recently become trendy for no apparent reason. Nowadays, you’ll be sipping a latte at Starbucks or sitting in the stands watching a football game when suddenly someone in a solid-colored, head-to-toe insulated jumpsuit will come walking by waving and having a grand ‘ole time, to the general amusement and astonishment of everyone around. They never reveal their identities (it must be against their code or something), but you can’t help but love them. Expect to see a veritable rainbow of these guys prancing around.

6. Amy Winehouse

Celebrity deaths always produce droves of costumes in loving tribute; hence the fifty-billion Michael Jacksons and Billy Mayses walking around in 2009. One of the biggest names to pass away this year was Winehouse, and you can count on thousands of people taking up her image to celebrate Halloween. To truly scare your friends, try putting your own spin on “Back to Black.”

5. Harry Potter

Hard to believe, but it happened: the multi-billion dollar book and film franchise that is Harry Potter finally concluded with its last movie this summer. All over the country, hordes of fans will likely attempt to fill the void left by dressing up as Harry and the gang one last time. The great thing about this option is that there are so many diverse characters, making it ideal for a group of friends. You can finally find a use for that one ginger kid you hang out with, and even get your bald buddy to be He Who Must Not Be Named, if they don’t mind having their nosed squashed down to get that snake look.

4. Zombies

Zombies may be overtaking vampires as the creature-to-be this year. They’ve always been popular among the Night of the Living Dead crowd, but what with the recent upsurge of shows like The Walking Dead, we’re sure to see some fun new twists on this old favorite. And if you have any extra time, go out and join the nearest annual Zombie Walk, where you’ll get to meet and commiserate with other brain-hungry individuals like yourself.

3. Lady Gaga

To list this as a single costume is really doing Lady Gaga a disservice; there are SO many options available to Little Monsters it’s almost a little scary. Her recent string of hits like “Telephone” and “Edge of Glory” have only increased this pop queen’s popularity tenfold. Almost as interesting as her songs are her…unusual wardrobe choices, making her the perfect choice for someone looking for a stand-out costume. Only please, no one wear a meat dress. That seems unsanitary.

2. Captain America

Out of several new superhero movies that debuted this past year, Captain America’s was certainly the stand-out. The story of a wannabe weakling whose dedicated patriotism (and a little top-secret army experimenting) turned him into a hunky defender of the peace tickled the heartstrings of fans of the red-white-n’-blue everywhere, and did an admirable job of updating an old classic. If you can’t find a sufficient costume in stores, swathing yourself in a large American flag should do the trick.

1. Charlie Sheen

Ok, everyone had to see it coming. No other celebrity made a bigger spectacle of himself this year than the Two-and-a-Half Men star, and Americans love a good show. Anyone with a “winning” personality and “tiger-blood” in their veins would surely do this costume justice, and give you an excuse to spout some hilariously off-putting quotes. Note: hookers and cocaine recommended but not required.
